COLLECTION The Society currently stores its sizable collection in space provided at the Ramsdell Library in Housatonic. However, it is a primary goal of the Society to relocate our collection to our future headquarters - The Captain Truman Wheeler Homestead on South Main Street. This will take place when building renovations are completed (expected to take 1-2 years). A capital fund-raising campaign will be announced during the coming months. Our collection includes materials and artifacts pertaining to the history of Great Barrington, including the village of Housatonic, and the hamlets of VanDeusenville, Risingdale and Seekonk. Currently, artifacts owned by the Society and the town's Historical Commission are catalogued and housed in the same location. Artifacts include paintings, prints, photographs, negatives, pictorial postcards, advertising, maps, theater programs, ephemera, literature, manuscripts, account books, photographic equipment, glass slides, porcelain, awards, medals, textiles, clothing, bedspreads, weaponry, souvenirs, models, glass, bottles, containers, signs, folk art, Native American items, furniture and tall clocks. A large collection of photographic prints, negatives and equipment from the 1940s to the 1980s is in the process of being catalogued. |
